In the UK it is possible to get loft insulation grantย via government funding in order to improve properties energy efficiency.

Government initiated insulation grants are there to help individuals and families with lower income focus entirely on increasing the energy saving capabilities of their homes. Loft insulation will save you anywhere from ยฃ120 to ยฃ280 a year on your energy bills.

We know that it can be difficult to understand the different criteria that govern application for grants such as insulation grants, so we hope that this guide can explain about what grants are available in the UK for loft insulation.

Are insulation grants still available in the UK?

Insulation grants are available in the UK for the foreseeable future thanks to the ECO4 scheme. The insulation grant for lofts is aimed at homeowners or private tenants who claim benefits or tax credits, especially if they do not have access to a mains gas supply.

In order to tackle fuel poverty, the UK government has initiated varieties of grants including loft insulation grant accessible in England, Scotland and Wales through energy companies.

According to the government the use of high quality loft insulation will lower the UKโ€™s dependency on inefficient heating systems over time and help in saving energy.

The May 2022 applications for loft insulation grants are now open.

How much money does loft insulation save?

By improving your home’s thermal efficiency, loft insulation can save you money.

Improvements in loft insulation can reduce this amount significantly and help you in saving energy as a quarter of heat is lost through the roof.

Depending on what type of house you live in, loft insulation can save you anywhere from ยฃ120 to ยฃ280 on your energy bills every year.

Furthermore, loft insulation can significantly reduce your household’s carbon footprint, resulting in a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions.

What is the ECO scheme?

You may have heard of the ECO grant initiated by the UK government. It is otherwise known as the Energy Company Obligation and is supported by the Energy Saving Trust.

This scheme has been through means testing to ensure it can deliver on improving homes energy efficiency for those living in the UK.

The fund allows individuals (homeowners and private tenants) with qualifying benefits to access a range of heating support: from insulating properties through electric storage heaters replacement to new boilers installation to improve heating systems for a better insulated property and to lower the energy bills.

Loft insulation grants that we offer free of charge are part of the ECO scheme.

If you are a private landlord, speak to your tenant โ€“ if they qualify for the grant, you can encourage them to apply and have your propertyโ€™s energy efficiency improved for many years to come.

The aim of the scheme is to help keep households warm by making them more energy efficient, reduce heating bills with support from the big energy companies and energy suppliers via grants.

This allows for Energy Saving Trust estimates to be met and the UKโ€™s carbon footprint to be improved. And in the long run, it may influence the price cap on energy company prices.

Licensed installers โ€“ such as our team โ€“ provide the labour for various insulations as they are paid from the grant, so you donโ€™t have top spend a penny provided that you meet certain criteria..

In the long term, the government aims to have the Energy Company Obligations scheme bring down the UKโ€™s carbon emissions and improve environmental impact through carbon saving obligation policy.

What is the best loft insulation to save on energy bills?

The best loft insulation material available in the UK is Earthwool.

This is because it is the greenest and most energy efficient form of loft insulation, being made up of 80% of recycled glass fibre within mineral wool.

It also contains no additional chemicals, such as formaldehyde, artificial colours/dyes and is a natural brown colour.

In addition to this, Earthwool is also rot proof (making it ideal for lofts), water proof and weaved together with only natural recycled materials and mineral wool with the ECOSE process.

Another benefit is the sound proofing qualities that Earthwool offers, allowing you to block out sounds from outside to make your property more peaceful. Earthwool also provides draught proofing qualities, limiting the amount of cold air getting inside.

Most homes associate loft insulation material with itching but Earthwool is smooth to the touch and has an incredibly low itch factor.

It is also non combustible, meaning it will not catch on fire and limits heat loss in your loft and home. This special type of insulation material is ideal for most properties.

Earthwool has an average lifespan of 25 years in a property.

Loft insulation FAQ

How thick should loft insulation be in the UK?

Loft insulation in the UK is usually laid out in particular recommended depth, depending on what itโ€™s made from. For glass wool, which UKES uses, the recommended depth is usually 270 mm for increased energy efficiency.

In most cases where other materials are used, the ideal measurements for energy saving loft insulation in most cases are 250 mm for rock wool and 220 mm for cellulose.

Can I put new insulation over old insulation?

Putting new insulating materials over old insulation is the most recommended method, especially with loft or cavity wall insulation.

As long as the old insulation isnโ€™t wet or damaged, it is draught proofed and insulated correctly, you can install loft insulation on top of older forms.

If insulation becomes waterlogged, it can lead to mildew, mould, damp problems or rot forming in your loft or roof area; in the long run, problems like this can lead to health concerns and costly repairs.

Even placing too much insulation in your loft or cavity wall can be detrimental, as it will cause moisture to build up and heat to be lost from your home.

What are the benefits of loft insulation?

Loft insulation is especially effective at stopping cold air from circulating via your roof space. It can also prevent additional heat loss from your home, which means that your energy bills will go down in the process.

There is also the possibility of protecting you and your family’s health from issues such as respiratory problems due to damp and worsening issues such as arthritis.

Not to mention that if you meet the qualifying criteria, you can get the loft insulation grants and have your home upgrade fully funded by the energy suppliers!

What is flat roof insulation?

Flat roof insulation is primarily used to increase a buildingโ€™s energy efficiency if they have a roof below the pitch of 10 degrees. This also allows for a reduction in condensation and moisture as well as a decrease in energy bills.

The building regulations for low slope roof insulation includes:

  • The roof must have a pitch of only 10 degrees
  • The insulation must be capable of taking the weight of the roof after construction
  • Must be fitted from the outside and capable of withstanding UK weather
  • There should be a ventilation gaps to allow for condensation to escape

What is warm and cold roof flat insulation?

Warm flat roof:

This insulation is used to allow homes to conserve heat and to prevent dampness and decay by allowing moisture to escape. It is ideal for the UK climate and is the most common form of flattened roof insulation material.

The most preferred material for this job is PIR boards (otherwise known as polyisocyanurate) as they are incredibly durable, easy to install and can withstand being walked on over time.

Warm low slope roof insulation should always be installed by professionals with specialist equipment.

Cold flat roof:

Cold flat roofs insulation works best for outbuildings and is an efficient and cost-effective way of insulating your roof. It will typically require a roof ventilation system to prevent the buildup of damp.

Loft insulation roll is the most preferred method of cold roof insulation installation. It can be placed between the rafters easily without requiring much disruption to you and your home. Loft insulation is easily moved and can be repositioned.

Can I get a grant for flat roofs insulation?

UKES doesnโ€™t provide this form of insulation but other companies may have their own schemes for this. We are experts in providing pitched roof insulation as well as cavity wall insulation and other forms of heating insulating.

It is possible to get ECO grants for this form of insulation, depending upon your circumstances.

If you are on a qualifying benefit- such as Child Benefit or Universal Credit among others โ€“ or live in a housing association property eligible for this insulation grant, it could be beneficial to apply.
